For schools, colleges and universities

Free referencing resources for teaching

Ready-to-print posters and two 50-minute lessons on why and how we reference, with slides, teacher notes and differentiated worksheets. Free to download, print and use in class.

Teaching packs

Two lessons for students starting out with referencing, from GCSE and A level to first-year university. Each pack has slides with timings, teacher notes, and A4 printables at three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Every file also comes in a dyslexia-friendly version.

Posters

A3 posters for classrooms and libraries: three for any class, two for A level, and seven library posters, one for each subject’s usual referencing style.

Printing

  • Print the posters on A3 and the printables on A4, at actual size (100%), not “fit to page”.
  • The slides are 16:9, for a projector or whiteboard. Print them one to a page if you want handouts.
  • The QR codes on the posters and handouts open this website, the referencing guides and Peel.

Before you teach

  • The practice sources (Hart 2019, Okafor and Reid 2022, Practice Press and the Oxford Learning Institute claim) are invented, and labelled as practice on every slide and sheet, so students can’t cite them by mistake.
  • The dyslexia-friendly versions use OpenDyslexic, with wider spacing, taller lines and no italics. Titles that Harvard puts in italics are underlined instead, so tell students the real reference uses italics.
  • The worksheets use Harvard. Styles vary between schools and universities, so check your own course handbook. The referencing guides cover Harvard, APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago, MHRA, OSCOLA, Vancouver, IEEE and AMA.
